A few weeks ago I went on a trip to Las Vegas, and if I’m being honest, I did more research on the vegan food I wanted to try than any attractions I wanted to see or things I wanted to do. Lucky for me, my friend who I went with loves food just as much as me. She’s not vegan, but is 100% down for eating any and all vegan food. So that is what we did.
First stop (and I quite literally mean FIRST stop – we went here before we even went to our hotel), The Modern Vegan. If I’m being honest, this post was initially going to be a collection of all the vegan food I ate on my trip, but I just have too many feelings about this specific restaurant that I thought it deserves its own post. I found this newly-opened restaurant a few weeks before our trip while scrolling the ‘gram one night, and I just knew I had to have it. I was struck with anxiety looking at the fully plant-based menu consisting of over 100 items, wondering how in the world I was going to choose one thing when the time came.
Naturally, we ended up choosing the most carb-heavy options available, because why not start our trip off feeling like a bag of garbage afterward?? Don’t get it twisted though, there were zero regrets about it.
We started off with the Espressi cocktail, which was the perfect cure for the jet lag we were experiencing, thanks to the 7am flights. One of my biggest heartbreaks since going vegan has been the fact that I can no longer have espresso martinis with Baileys when I go out (r.i.p.). But as they say, when one door closes, another one opens. And this drink did exactly that. It filled the espresso martini-shaped hole in my heart. Did I just compare a cocktail to a metaphorical door opening? Yup.
Onto the food. Between the two of us, we shared the Popcorn Chik’n, the Mac N Cheese Balls, and The Cowboy Burger. And I’m here to report that they were all life-changing. Truly no complaints.
The Popcorn Chick’n tasted exactly like my childhood days spent at the skating rink in my hometown. The texture was so chicken-like, and the “TMV sauce” that they serve with it was next level.
The Mac N Cheese Balls were as good as you would imagine deep fried balls of cheesy, bacon-flavoured macaroni goodness would be. I mean, what more can I even say?
Now, you should know that The Modern Vegan has ELEVEN plant-based burgers on their menu. Can you imagine the stress??? We decided to go with The Cowboy, which was topped with caramelized onions, cucumbers, smoked gouda, bacon, and BBQ sauce on a pretzel bun. DROOL. As much as I love a good veggie burger, I don’t typically order them when I go to restaurants because I find that for the most part, they are nothing extravagant or different. So I was excited to see all of the unique variations on this menu and HAD to try one.
Last, but not least, DESSERT. Trust me when I say that we were both writhing in pain from how full we were at this point. But when our server asked us about dessert, we gave each other that look – one that said “well we kind of HAVE to, don’t we??” We are a lot of things, but we are not quitters. And we were determined to try one of their desserts. We went with the “Oh My God” – a classic hot fudge sundae with vanilla ice cream, a warm brownie, chocolate sauce, peanuts and granola. And all I can say is Oh. My. God. is right.
Our experience at The Modern Vegan was everything I had imagined and more, from the atmosphere, to the friendly staff, to the amazing food. The only real negative is that I have to book a flight if I ever want to eat here again. Sigh. Until next time, my long-distance lover ❤
